Black and White From Nancy Crow's Workshop

Well, it is finally completed ---- except for the quilting which I (and Penny) have been discussing without coming to a conclusion. I feel that I want to do the quilting myself and Penny is going to teach me both hand quilting and machine quilting techniques as soon as I'm done with this post.

The exercise was to piece black and white strips together in various widths and then create a composition focusing on lines and shapes. I am pleased with the design and that it lies fairly flat and is a fairly even rectangle given all the seams.

The question now is quilting --- design? hand or machine? thread -- color, weight? So I'm asking all you experienced quilters to let me know what you would recommend.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Louise, I think your b&w quilt is fabulous. I would like to take a workshop with Nancy Crow. Can you give me some feedback on the workshop that you took; did you think it was worth your time and resources, etc. Also, I'd love to join you in learning how to hand quilt.

I just machine quilted a 5'x6' quilt that I didn't want to use the large long arm machine on. I find it very difficult to lean over it for hours. So I machine quilted by inserting the batting section by section and rolling up the remainder which wouldn't have that bulk had I used one complete batting piece. I basted the batting sections together as I progressed. The only real challenge was regulating the stitch length due to the weight of the quilt pulling on it.

Louise,
I think your black and white design is so dramatic and crisp! I almost hate to taint it with quilting! But I always feel this way and once a quilting design is selected and done it just makes the piece richer. I always like red with B&W but that might just be too far out there. You are in good hands with learning hand quilting from Penny!

Hi Louse,

I have been thinking about your quilt for quite some time. It is very striking and industrial in some way. I really love how the center almost looks woven. Anyway, my suggestion for quilting would be 1000 Denier silk in a rust color and big stitches. Great piece.
