waves in the water
I'm starting a new quilt that involves two streams coming together to form a river, ending in a small waterfall, with a pool / lake in the foreground. I am trying to decide whether to piece the streams and river or to make bias strips and applique them. I liked Penny's inset gentle curves, particularly the ones where she made small sections and then recut them into other larger pieces. However, I would like to make my river into a series of even more-curvy ripples. Any suggestions? gini

Gini--I think either piecing or applique would work. Take a look at Cher Cartwright's quilt "Rock, Paper, Scissors," which was in Quilt National 2003 and is described as machine pieced: http://www.chercartwright.com/ (and click on "Spheres Series"). For a machine applique technique that lets you sew just about any shape you could draw, I suggest Vikki Pignatelli, _Quilting by Improvisation: Exploring Curves, Openwork and Dimension_. She never uses the word "applique"--directions are all for sewing one piece to another with a blind-hem stitch--but the method is essentially machine applique, with ideas and examples for all kinds of shapes and layers. The technique can also be used for hand sewing the applique (my plan for "Shelter"). For examples of Pignatelli's own work, look here: http://www.vikkipignatelli.com/gallery.htm
